Established in 1969, Samsung Electronics has grown into one of the world¡¯s leading electronics companies and a pioneer of digital technology. Samsung Electronics is the flagship affiliate of the Samsung business group, which was founded more than 70 years ago as a small South Korean export company, and has today become one of the most recognized global brands.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies with 2009 consolidated sales of $116.8 billion. Employing approximately 187,800 people in 185 offices in 65 countries, the company consists of eight independently operated business units: Visual Display, Mobile Communications, Telecommunication Systems, Digital Imaging, Digital Appliances, IT Solutions, Semiconductor and LCD. Recognized as one of the fastest growing global brands, Samsung Electronics is a leading producer of digital TVs, memory chips, mobile phones and TFT-LCDs.
The EUCCK ICT Committee organised a private tour for members on June 10th . The special tour, hosted by Vice President, Dr. Hung Song, began with the Samsung History Museum where technologies from the past, present and future were showcased. Following the tour, EUCCK participants received an in depth presentation of "Samsung Electronics in the global marketplace¡± by Reuben Staines, Manager at Samsung Global Communications, who also provided specific insights of Samsung¡¯s business in Europe.
Europe continues to be a critical region for Samsung. Europe is the number one in terms of sales since 2006. Currently the European region is nearly 30 percent of global sales. Last year this region was at the forefront when Samsung pioneered the LED TV market, selling 1.3 million units in Europe out the 2.6 million units sold worldwide. This year the 3D solution was first to market in Europe. Just as Samsung has led in TV, they are leading in phones. Samsung has now reached Number One in the full touch phone segment.
¡°We have a strong presence in the region, not just in sales but also our production and research base¡± Mr. Reuben Staines, stated during his presentation.
¡°With a regional HQ in Surrey, Samsung employs nearly 9000 people in the region. We have 16 sales subsidiaries and four production facilities in Europe: TVs in Hungary, LCD plant in Slovakia, TV, monitor and AV products again in Slovakia, and at the end of 2009 we acquired Amica¡¯s refrigerator and washing machine manufacturing facilities in Poland marking an important step toward our goal of being the leader in the European home appliance market¡±.

Samsung¡¯s relationship with Europe extends beyond market leadership. Through programs such as the Pink Ribbon charity breast cancer campaign and the Football in the Community events, Samsung are actively seeking to be a contributing member in good standing of the European Community. In Europe Samsung are also working with National Geographic., embarking on research and exploration missions and a year-long media campaign to spread the word about green practices.
Following Mr. Staines¡¯s presentation, special host, Vice President Dr. Hung Song shared his industry expertise and business perspectives with EUCCK members. Finally, all participants enjoyed lunch together.
The Chamber wishes to especially thank VP Dr. Song, the PR team at Samsung and EUCCK ICT Chairman, Mr. Hongjin Kim for providing this unique opportunity to members.
